Foam Glass Aggregate

Foam Glass Aggregate

Foam glass aggregate (FGA) is a light-weight and environmentally friendly alternative to traditional cast slabs and hardcore, being manufactured from recycled glass. Foam glass aggregate is a fraction of the density of the equivalent volume of gravel and hardcore making it easier and greener to transport and work with.

After it has been compacted, FGA takes on excellent compressive strength and by virtue of its closed cell structure is non-capillary in nature. The millions of closed cells capture air in small pockets and allow FGA to provide insulation and damp resistance in one layer.

Maximum Compacted Single Layer:

300

Product Benefits:

  • Made from recycled waste glass.
  • Suitable for installation thicknesses between 150–900 mm.
  • Foam Glass Aggregate consists of millions of closed cells. The air trapped in these cells give this remarkable aggregate outstanding insulation properties.
  • The material is also completely frost proof and is anti-capillary which means that it cannot absorb any moisture therefore protecting the building fabric from mould and subsequent structural damage.
  • Any water or moisture that does happen to pass through the aggregate can simply drain away.
  • Foam glass aggregate should be compacted using a vibrating whacker plate weighing 90–120 kg. Excessive compaction will waste material but does not have a negative impact on the floor’s performance. For post-compaction thicknesses greater than 300 mm, distribution and compaction should be undertaken as two or three distinct layers.

Foam Glass Aggregate:

Installation Guide

01
Foam glass aggregate is typically delivered in 1500 litre bulk bags.

01

02 Install 120–150 g / m² separating membrane which is to be lapped up the edges of the completed aggregate installation to its entire depth.

02

03
Foam glass aggregate is light and can easily be distributed with wheelbarrows.

03

04
Even out roughly with shovel.

04

05
Rake the aggregate to even it out.

05

06 The aggregate should be compacted using a 90–120 kg whacker plate. Following compaction, boarding should be used to prevent disturbance of the aggregate.
